Yozuna is in the process of becoming certified as CarbonZero. This is one way of reducing our carbon footprint as well as helping to facilitate concerns about food miles on the products we sell.
Yozuna has always believed in supporting Africa. We have noticed a trend towards buying food locally - which is fantastic. But we have also noticed people choosing local produce over fairly traded goods, and this can have a serious knock-on effect on the welfare of already established cooperatives in these countries.
By investing into becoming CarbonZero we will have a choice of where funds can be directed either into local afforestation projects or energy saving projects that are being established in Kenya and Eastern Africa, such as:
Conversion of kerosene burning lamps to solar power LED lanterns
Distribution of solar ovens to poor communities using timber / charcoal as a fuel source
Distribution of energy saving light bulbs CFL’s to replace inefficient incandescent bulbs in communities, schools and hospitals that can not otherwise afford them
Development of biogas entrapment plants to provide a clean cooking fuel
As well as saving on carbon emissions, these projects all have great spin-off benefits; the kerosene lantern project saves the user money and removes exposure to respiratory illness and fire risk; the biogas project and the solar ovens give villagers a clean source of fuel and removes the requirement to fell trees for firewood.
All CarbonZero methods are verified independently and are amongst the highest quality that you will find.
This means that in a short while, all our customers will be receiving CarbonZero goods and this really makes what we do worth while. All our packing materials are fully recyclable and every effort is made not to use any plastic in our packing and dispatching process.
We have chosen Kilner jars for our jam for the simple reason; its environmental impact is a lot less then standard jam jars.
